Get Started

Mark Twain is considered the father of American Literature. His novels are loved around the world. What many people don’t know about Mark Twain is that he was an entrepreneur and jumped from project to project. Every single one of those projects proved to be a failure.

He was a horrible business man. However, we can still learn a lot from his principles.

Advice for starting new ventures

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”

Every good plan starts with a good idea. As a leader, you have to take that idea and put it on paper. You have to take steps to make that come to life. What ideas have you been sitting on because you are afraid of failure? If you are afraid of failure, it’s a certainty.

Being original

“When you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”

You have to have something that makes you stand out. If you are just doing what everyone else is doing, clients are going to go with the lowest price. Make sure your products and services are distinct. If they aren’t, find out how to differentiate yourself from the pack.

How to develop a good marketing plan

“When everyone is looking for gold, it’s a good time to be in the pick and shovel business.”

Sometimes, a shift in thinking is needed. In business school, they refer to these events in history as “paradigm shifts.” In your business, perhaps you should be the one looking to shift the paradigm. What market segment have you ignored? Where can you do better?

Some motivation

“All you need in this world is ignorance and confidence and success is guaranteed.”

Sometimes, your plans won’t work out the way you had envisioned. That’s normal. Sometimes, it can be a good thing to have a little ignorance, as long as you have the confidence to make up for it. So, take that new idea and make something out of it. Don’t just let it gather dust.
